History

The Metuchen Police Department was organized on March 1, 1900. It was comprised of only one officer at that time. The department reached peak strength between 1973 and 1976 when it had thirty-five officers. The department currently has three divisions: the administrative division, investigative division, patrol division, and traffic and community policing unit. Today the Metuchen Police Department has thirty-three sworn officers, three police administrative assistants and seven auxiliary officers.

The department has changed considerably since its inception in 1900 by way of computer technology, weapons, and other changes that have evolved over the years in the police profession. Metuchen is a unique community with a crime rate that is low enough so the police department can provide excellent service to its residence. The motto, “ Protect and Serve” is a motto that the Metuchen Police Department exemplifies.
