Emergency Management

Emergency Management Information

The Office of Emergency Management is responsible to mitigate, prepare for, respond to, and recover from the effects of any emergency in the Borough resulting from natural or man-made disasters. These may include fires, transportation accidents, severe weather and criminal activity. The Office of Emergency Management conducts emergency planning and will alert, mobilize and coordinate all municipal departments and agencies in the event of an emergency. The Office also serves as liason with neighboring municipalities, the County and the State. Upon request we will assist residents, schools and businesses with emergency planning.

In the event of a disaster or emergency, Borough residents may be asked to evacuate their home or shelter in place by remaining where they are. You and your family can cope with emergencies by preparing in advance.

  • Learn about disasters that are most likely to happen such as fire, severe weather or transportation accidents.
  • Create a plan and review it with your family. Discuss shelter and evacuation. Have an out of area family contact and instruct all family members away from home at the time of a disaster to call that person and tell them where they are and whether they are safe.
  • Know basic first aid, CPR and how to operate a fire extinguisher. Learn how to shut off the utilities in your home.
  • Assemble a disaster supply kit with items you may need in an evacuation. Stock emergency supplies in case you are confined to your home. Keep a flashlight and portable radio in working order.

The Borough of Metuchen has contracted with Emergency Communications Network to license its CodeRED high-speed notification solution. The CodeRED system provides Metuchen officials the ability to quickly deliver messages to targeted areas or the entire Borough of Metuchen.

Such systems are only as good as the telephone number database supporting them. "If your phone number is not in the database, you will not be called." One of the reasons the CodeRED system was selected is it gives individuals and businesses the ability to add their own phone numbers directly into the system's database, this is an extremely important feature.

No one should automatically assume his or her phone number is included. All individuals and businesses are encouraged to enroll. Required information includes first and last name, street address (physical address, no P.O. boxes), city, state, zip code, and primary phone number, additional phone numbers can be entered as well.

All businesses should register, as well as all individuals who have unlisted phone numbers, who have changed their phone number or address within the past year, and those who use a cellular phone or VoIP phone as their primary number.

CodeRED allows geographically based delivery, which means street addresses are required to ensure emergency notification calls are received by the proper individuals in a given situation. The system works for cell phones too, but we need to have an associated street address to provide relevant messages.

CodeRED gives those who want to be included an easy and secure method for inputting information. The data collected will only be used for emergency notification purposes.
