Auxiliary Police

The Metuchen Auxiliary Police is a group of well-trained Volunteer Police Officers consisting of men and women that serves the borough of Metuchen by volunteering countless unseen hours for the greater good of the community.

Auxiliary Officers handle traffic and crowd control during many events that occur during the year, such as the Metuchen Holiday Parade, Metuchen Country Fair, Metuchen Street Fair, Memorial Day Parade, Charity Walks / Runs and many more.

Auxiliary Officers maybe called out at any time to respond during major disasters or disastrous situations that may affect the Borough of Metuchen.

Auxiliary Officers also provide addition patrols within the Borough and are an extra set of eyes and ears for the police department.

Other assignments of the Auxiliary Police are to work with the Police Department to:

Assist in Emergency or Disastrous Situations
Court Room Security
Crowd Control
Emergency Call-outs
Fire Calls
First Aid Calls
Patrol (car patrol with other Auxiliary members or Full Officers of the Metuchen Police Dept.)
Reduce Hazards
Road Closures
Traffic Control
Also to provide services deemed necessary by the Chief of Police

Auxiliary Police help to enhance the quality of life for the citizens, visitors, and businesses of the community.

All new members are required by the State of New Jersey to attend a Basic Auxiliary Police Academy before becoming an active member. The academy runs 14 to 16 weeks and the Middlesex County Auxiliary Police Academy, Middlesex County Prosecutors Office, and the Office of Emergency Management give the course.

Auxiliary Officers do not carry firearms.

However, during the training period, new members will receive hands on training in handcuffing, expandable batons (nightstick), OC Spray (mace), Self-defensive, and CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation / AED (Automated external defibrillator.

During the new members time at the academy they will be instructed in many different course such as:

Be a citizen of the United States
